San Francisco-Big Sur Roadtrip - Day 2

Winnie & Brownie says:

2nd day of our SF trip... After a late check-in and good sleep at Broadway Major Inn, at the heart of the city. We are refreshed and ready to see the other side of the city. Yesterday is the Pier, the happening place. Today is the downtown of SF and Chinatown...

SF is so different from LA. LA is laterally flat, and highrise buildings only in downtown. But SF Bay is next to the ocean, while its downtown is on hills. Most of the old buildings are Victorian style houses. You need a powerful car to drive around, and go up slopes of sometimes 30degree. That's steep!

We park our car at a nearby structure at Post Street, parking is expensive in downtown, $22 for a day!! And begin our walk to the nearby restaurant for makan. A good 20 mins walk to open up the stomach for a hearty meal.

One of the many steep roads...

Our lunch destination, Borobudur, Indonesian restuarant, serving Southeast Asian food...

Roti Prata,

& satay.

After a good lunch, we begin our walk of SF... To downtown, where you find shopping centers and shopping centers.

Bus stop...

SF bus still running on electric grids... like Singapore in the 1960s.

This is Victoria Secret, not art gallery :)

Disney Store...

And we bring Dumbo, the flying elephant home.

Real art gallery...

Christmas is over, and this tall Christmas tree is being shaved off its branches, before being chopped down. Almost the same height as the Macy's complex behind. Looks bald without the branches and leaves...

Icon of SF - golden gate bridge...

We are waiting to catch the tram to go to Chinatown... seems a long wait

the tram is coming!!

It is so crowded we need to stand on the steps and hold onto the pole for our dear life... We can touch the other tram as it went past us... That is how near the trams are to each other.

On our way... Choo choo...

Finally, we alight, and find ourselves at Chinatown... Yah :)

Don't know why Chinatown have this "gate". Yokohama, LA, SF Chinatown all have this kind of gate, but not in Chinese-majority countries?

Pi-Xiu brings prosperity...

It's drizzling a bit, but no stopping us from enjoying the day...

Chinese & western cakes,

all kinds of chinese health products,

old & new SF,

martial art school,

jade shop,

chinese folks playing poker cards in the background, at this small park...

clan association & school,

I don't know what this warning means, cannot visit this area, or enter at your own risk... "I told you so" excuse, but this area is Chinatown!!

Sacramento = Chinatown??

Pez collectibles,

tram souvenir,

See the sky so foggy that we can't see the top of the building... It's a foggy day.

Night is falling fast, and it's a fun and crazy day at Chinatown. Time for dinner, and this time, at Fisherman's Wharf. Take the Tram Mason line to the Wharf...

This time, finally got the seat... Discover how the tram operates, going upslope, driver engages the tram to the cable running in the ground, and the cable pulls the tram along. Downslope, the driver pulls on the brake to slow down the tram... Interesting :)

Halfway, get off and walk the short distance to Fisherman's Wharf.

Here we are, walking from day to night... to the Wharf...

Buy a lot of stuff...

McDonald, not today.

Sells crab, clam soup and everything seafood.

Singapore has a rainforest cafe, in Liang Court, before it close shop. So this is the dinner place for us tonight...

King Kong & beauty,

Out dinner adventure begins...

the earth shakes, as the animal celebrates... what??

prawn tacos,

& crayfish pasta.

Rainforest cafe is so fun, food is good... hehe. Let's visit the rest of the animals and creatures...

Even the toilet is like a safari...

We decided to walk all the way from Fisherman's Wharf back to our car, which is a long way, about 45mins walk... Walk from Wharf area to Nob/Russian Hill to downtown... But it is a good way to burn off the food we eat at rainforest...

They even have a trail name for this long walk, "Barbary Coast".

As we walk , came across a house with this dog, looking at us through the window. She is a big-eyed dog with long ears like those of the wolves and it is black and white coloured. She looks sad and lonely inside her master's room.

Reach Russian Hill, with its row of luxurious hotels, a long way up... very tiring walk... now will be downhill...

Finally, reach Post Street, where we park the car. And drive back to inn.

The elevator is the old kind, have to open and close the door manually.

And this is how the inn looks from outside...

& inside.
