Our 2nd roadtrip, San Francisco & Big Sur along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1...
It is a long 6 hour drive to San Francisco along I-5, and to save time, we start at midnight, so we will reach SF in the morning... It is scary to drive at night along the I-5. A point along the highway around 3-4am, where the mist and fog get so bad, that I cannot see the road infront. Even high-beam also not much of a use and have to drive slowly forward, but not so slowly since it is highway, around 70kmph. And the big trucks are just passing us, as if they know the road very well. We are so glad when we can see the road again... But things sometime does not go your way, our car breakdown on the Highway before Oakland, just half-hour more to go before SF :(
Our first breakdown, call the insurance company for emergency breakdown service, and 911 for highway help, since we are in the center-lane of the highway... And it is morning peak rush... Pretty scary, looking at all the cars and trucks, overtaking you, while you look helpless in the car. But the Highway Patrol team is very efficient, just 5 mins and they are here. Stop the traffic and push the car to the shoulder, all done so fast and efficient. We are impressed!!! We definitely need these Highway Patrol teams around.
And soon, the tow truck is here, but we just need a jump-start, and we follow the truck to the car repair company for a check... Lucky, no big deal here, and we are back on our way...
the tow truck,
Came across a hill full with crosses, don't know what they are for, interesting though. Hope it is not a cemetery, but I don't think so.
Oakland is our first destination, for a lunch at the Kopitiam... Yap, Kopitiam, Singapore-style. With all the same Singapore foodies. The Chef is even from "Boon Tong Kee". So happy to finally see an authentic Singapore restaurant :)
Carrot cake,
The chicken rice and carrot cake are good, but the belacan a bit off the mark. Hard to find the right ingredient in US for the belacan, have to make do... But we are both satisfied :)
A good lunch provides good energy for the day, as we start our way from Oakland to SF, via the Oakland-SF bridge... And guess who is driving, our beloved dear Winnie is on the driver seat...
Via-point is a small island in the middle of Oakland & SF, along the Oakland-SF bridge, called Treasure Island. Of course, we drive in and see the treasures for ourselves... Very small island, about the size of St John Island or about-there. One side, you can see Oakland, below is the Oakland portion of the bridge.
Turn 180 degree, and you see SF downtown, and the SF portion of the bridge.
There is even a naval base in Treasure Island, behind us, but of course we cannot go in...
Anyway, it is just a short stay in TI, nothing to see there, except the scenery. So it is off to SF...
SF still using electric tram...
You can take this gold and blue fleet to Prison Island, Alcatraz, where formerly houses prisoners, just off SF Bay.
Night comes early during wintertime, only 6pm, and so dark already.
So we end up trying the 3D motion simulation ride, all 3 shows... Wear a 3D glasses, and strap onto a mobile seat, that jerks up and down... exciting... The best ride is the log ride, sometimes scary but fun :)
And we have dinner at HardRock, in Pier 39... Food-wise, same standard. Ambience-wise, feels different, can't say how... But on the whole, it's fun and great to be in SF... :)
